The event was staged by the Thai government in an effort to lure foreigners to a country whose tourist-friendly image has been tested in recent years by deadly floods, political violence and concerns about crime and safety. The World Record of Thai Massage

World Record for Thai Massage project is set to draw 840 pairs of contestants, beating the current record held for two years by Australia of 232 couples. Contests will also be held in Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani and Phuket. The record attempt is a collaboration between the Public Health Ministry, the Department of Export Promotion, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and national airline THAI. At a launching ceremony yesterday, Chiang Mai provincial public health officer Wattana Kanchanakamon said the project - organised jointly by the Public Health Ministry, the Department of Export Promotion, Tourism Authority of Thailand and Thai Airways - aimed to promote Thai massage as well as boost health tourism.
